<b>The Concern:</b><br />
A construction company saw an increase in the number of injuries that were<br />
occurring on its job sites and needed to take action. Not only were they<br />
concerned about employee safety but if they continued to have accidents, they<br />
feared an increase in their insurance costs as well as possible lawsuits related to injuries.<br />
<br />
The company was committed to improving safety and protecting its employees<br />
from harmful situations. They not only wanted to remind workers how to be safe on the job but also wanted to enlist their help in correcting safety-related issues and concerns.<br />
<br />
<b>The Solution:</b><br />
The company initiated a new safety incentive program and decided to use small tally books with clear insert pages to help employees get involved.<br />
A list of safety tips and goals as well as details regarding the new safety incentive program were placed in the clear insert pages. Each employee was asked to review the safety tips regularly. In addition workers were urged to record safety hazards at the work site and provide a suggestion on how to eliminate the hazard.<br />
<br />
At the end of each week, workers turned in their suggestions, and the hazards<br />
were then identified and corrected. All suggestions were submitted into a<br />
random weekly drawing and the worker/s whose name was drawn was awarded a prize. The more suggestions submitted by a worker the better his/her odds of winning, and the more safety improvements for the company.<br />
<br />
<b>The Results:</b><br />
Safety awareness increased and the number of accidents decreased. Employee<br />
involvement and morale also increased significantly as employees felt their<br />
ideas and suggestions were not only valued and appreciated, but also part of the solution. Employees continued to use their tally books and submit suggestions.<br />

In Selling the Invisible, Harry Beckwith writes about “The Heart of a Brand”. He makes the point that the heart of a service brand and the key to long-term success is the integrity of the people behind the brand. It is the closest thing to a guarantee that your customer has. The funny thing is, as I thought about turkeys and branding, a series of brand names kept popping in my head.<br /><br />Just for kicks, I did an internet search and found a series of interesting discussions on the kind (brand) of turkey that is the "best" one to buy. One of the answers said, "I always buy (brandname) turkey. <em>I just trust the brand</em>." There was no other reason mentioned for this customer's loyalty other than the fact that this brand evokes a feeling of trust. The customer didn't mention taste, safety, price or any of the other elements that can go into building a brand. The implication is that the customer trusted the brand enough to believe that this particular turkey would be juicy, taste good, and be a safe product. Why this brand over any of the other brands? Intrigued, I continued to search.<br /><br />Over and over again, this particular brand of turkey is showing up on blogs and answers to questions. Is the turkey really that much better? Or has this particular company just done an excellent job at branding through a great marketing plan? I suspect it's a little of both.<br /><br />Do your customers just "trust" your brand? For some, it’s more than just a new manager, it’s a whole new management team. This recently happened to a new client of ours. How they handled the transition is an interesting case study.<br /><br />This particular client has about 500 employees located in various offices around the United States. They have been in business for a number of years and had developed a very “old-school” management philosophy. When the owners decided to sell the business, new management came in with new ideas, new philosophies and a new energy.<br /><br />They had many challenges. How would they allay the natural fears that come with any change in management style? How would they create a close-knit team feeling and loyalty among their employees and boost morale at the same time? How would they make sure that the new management philosophy became part of the attitude and customer service efforts of their employees?<br /><br />First, the management team sat down and devised a new three-part mission statement that more accurately reflected their forward-thinking positive business philosophy.
